Before achieving independence in 1968, Mauritius was colonised by the Dutch, French, and British. Since then, it has transformed from a low-income, agriculture-based economy into a diversified middle-income economy. Key growth sectors include industry, financial services, tourism, and outsourcing. Mauritius now has one of Africa’s highest per capita incomes and has attracted over 32,000 offshore entities, many focusing on commerce in South Africa, India, and China. The country enjoys a stable democracy, regular free elections, and a positive human rights record.
